Video Clips of My Work with Dance

Jacob’s Pillow 2004-2008

Milton Myers is a teacher and choreographer of world renown. I have had the pleasure of working with Milton as both accompanist and composer. These four clips, from classes at Jacob's Pillow Contemporary Traditions Program in 2004, show his sensitivity to music and his extraordinary ability to inspire those around him. Pam Pribisco is one of the most intelligent artists I have ever met. Her teaching is a wonderful blend of humor, intuition, profound artistry and common sense. It is always a pleasure to work with her. Click on image to view video clip in Quick Time™ Player version 7.2. These are large files and may take a few minutes to load.

Robert Battle, a choreographer known for his dynamic energy and grasp of musical form, taught this master class in July of 2004. These clips show how exciting working with dance can be from a musician's perspective. Put another way-I had a blast playing for Robert. Lester Horton Syllabus
The four examples are studies from the Lester Horton syllabus as it is taught at the Alvin Ailey American Dance center in New York City. The artistic director was Ana Marie Forsythe in collaboration with Marjorie Perces (who danced with Lester Horton) and was produced by Babette Coffey-Fisch for Dance Spotlight and distributed by Kultur Video.

Fortifications
Fortifications (there are 17 in all) are studies that target various technical problems and the strengthening of the body parts involved. Just as importantly, these studies, the equivalent being musical etudes for the musician, help to develop the dancers sense of expression, phrasing, dynamics and sense of time while exploring various complex rhythmic relationships. Preludes (there are six in all in this syllabus) are brief studies in artistic expression. Click on image to view video clip in Quick Time™ Player version 7.2.

Philadanco

This is an excerpt from a piece that I did in collaboration with Mitlon Myers for Philadanco’s 35th anniversary concert at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. The music was composed and produced in my studio. The ballet was called A Bit of Kinship and Exoticism. Click on image to view video clip in Quick Time™ Player version 7.2.

Jacob’s Pillow 2007

The summer of 2007 was my 10th year at the Jacob’s Pillow. The following clips are excerpts from a collaboration with Nina Watt for the Contemporary Traditions Project (under the direction of Mitlon Myers). The movement sequences are derived from various works in the repertory of José Limón. the performance takes place at the Inside/Out Stage at Jacob’s Pillow as part of the weekly student performances that are held for the summer months. The date was July 16, 2005. I used my Roland D-70 and Roland XV-5080 synthesizers for this performance. Click on image to view video clip in Quick Time™ Player version 7.2.
